Carved solid wood escabelle, Swiss Alps, circa 1950
REF: 7384
Traditional escabelle chair with a carved backrest, made from solid turned wood, characteristic of Alpine folk art.
The back panel is finely sculpted with a stylized face, or mascaron, framed by swirling vegetal forms, and features a heart-shaped cutout, a common motif in mountain interiors symbolizing home and warmth. The rectangular seat with rounded edges rests on four subtly splayed legs, turned in a rustic style.
Each part is handcrafted, reflecting local woodworking traditions still practiced in the mid-20th century. Such chairs were typically produced in small batches for chalets, inns, or folkloric gatherings.
A decorative yet functional piece, standing between utilitarian furniture and domestic sculpture.
Seat height : 18.9 inches.
