Artist
- Max Bill
Stool developed in the context of teaching at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm, attributed to Max Bill in collaboration with Hans Gugelot and Paul Hildinger. The original version, created in 1954, featured an integrated drawer under the seat. The model shown here corresponds to the standardized version produced from 1962 onwards, simplified and without a drawer.
Made of chipboard and a turned wooden dowel, the structure follows a rational construction: two vertical side panels, a top board, and a cylindrical crossbar. This element serves simultaneously as reinforcement, transport handle, and, depending on use, footrest. The piece can function as a seat, side table, or modular storage unit.
Conceived as a didactic object, the stool reflects the functional rigor and "less but better" ethos championed at Ulm. It was designed to be built by hand in workshops, understood in its logic, and used in diverse settings.
